As It Were - Memories of a Chesterfield Lad
by John Connolley

The Crooked Spire, Chesterfield

John Connolley was the seventh of thirteen children born to John Thomas Connolley (1882-1971) and Ellen Ann Daykin (1887-1964).

John's father was the son of poor Irish immigrants and his mother's ancestors came to Chesterfield from the lead mines of Swaledale via the coalfields of County Durham.

The family lived at 49 Barker Lane, Brampton, Chesterfield, for many years and John was born there on the 9th May 1917. John's brothers and sisters have all passed away now.

As It Were is a collection of John's memories which he wrote in serial form to the Trivvies mailing list in his early 80s.

The 'memories' were copied by Patricia Hayward.
