As It Were - Memories of a Chesterfield Lad
by John Connolley

The Crooked Spire, Chesterfield

John Connolley was the seventh of thirteen children born to John Thomas Connolley (1882-1971) and Ellen Ann Daykin (1887-1964).

John's father was the son of poor Irish immigrants and his mother's ancestors came to Chesterfield from the lead mines of Swaledale via the coalfields of County Durham.

The family lived at 49 Barker Lane, Brampton, Chesterfield, for many years and John was born there on the 9th May 1917. John died in September 2010 at the age of 93, the last survivor of the thirteen children.

As It Were is a collection of John's memories which he wrote in serial form to the Trivvies mailing list in his early 80s.

The memories were copied by Patricia Hayward.
