Firefly
Written by John Close
This version recorded 1998

Possibly still my own favourite song, adventurous harmonically whilst having an almost stark, nervy lyric with a tropical setting. It still ends on an optimistic note, like so many of my sad-sounding songs. Recorded 1998, the drums, lead instruments and chords from a Yamaha PSR630, electric bass guitar.

Cathy tends to dismiss her "early" recordings from 1998 and it has to be said that her performances three years on were better, but she sings this with sensitivity in a relaxed, uncluttered style.

Was a stormy night
I was sitting all alone
By an open window
In the darkness of my home
But you know what it's like in this world
Noone's safe anymore
You know what it's like in this world
No one's safe any more
Firefly, burn on, through the darkness in my soul
Firefly, burn on, though the world has grown cold
Your light still burns.

Was an aimless flight
Far as you were concerned
You weren't worried where
Long as your light still burned
But oh, the change it's made in me
Well, I want you to know
Oh, the change it's made in me
I want you to know...

Now my only hope
Is that you will stay
On this wild night
And will lead the way
Out of all that time and the world
Hold over me
Out of all that time and the world
Hold now over me...
