Michele has always had an excellent ear for material and this one is a good example.  I don't recall her giving me a tape of the original or anything like that, she simply sang it and I worked out an arrangement.  One night she starting singing "The Blacksmith" unaccompanied and I found a chord sequence for the song that she fell in love with and used a few years later on her first album "Tongue and Groove".
